Patrons

A Patron may be a personage of some meaningful influence (like a mafia boss, a king, a head of a cult, or Robin Hood) or a god (like the God of Flowering Weeds.)

Patrons may be expected to take great offense at being sought out without offer of significant reward (often a Pledge or Tribute.)

Patronage

Brand new devotees of a Patron take the Patron's Pledge and are given the Patron's Paraphernalia to allow them to show their allegiance, when circumstances require. A character may only be Pledged to one Patron at a time.

Breaking the Pledge requires atonement, or in more serious cases, expulsion and/or retaliation.

Each time the character returns from an Expedition:

  1. Pay 10% XP of all experience earned per Secret known. (If you know 2 secrets, you must pay 20% of your experience to the Patron.)
  2. If the character can explain what they have achieved for the Patron, roll 2D4. If the result is higher than the number of secrets learned from that Patron, the Patron teaches a new Secret.

Breaking a taboo removes the power of a random Secret. Though you still know the Secret, your knowledge produces no effect.

When a character knows all of the Secrets, the Patron begins the character on the path toward their Destiny, which requires a lengthy pilgrimage or ritual. Refusing this Destiny invites assassination or worse.

Example Patrons

1: Populad

Pledge: We're all insignificant together.

Paraphernalia: Dark grey clothes and skin-paint.

Secrets

Faceless: Nobody can describe you, or recognise you from even moments ago.

Selfless: When it suits you, you do not count as a living being.

Shadowless: You leave no mark on the world around you. Things just fall back into a natural place and nobody will know you were there.

Taboos: gain fame

Destiny: Become invisible to all except those who share this Destiny.

2: Horroripa

Pledge: Present a horrible visage to keep the real terrors at bay.

Paraphernalia: Horrible masks and hairy suits.

Secrets

Shock: Anyone you surprise must pass a CHA Save or blurt out a secret. If they don't have any secrets, their imagination creates one.

Disgust: Anyone watching you eat must pass a CHA Save or vomit.

Fear: Anyone that locks eyes with you must pass a CHA Save or reveal something they fear.

Taboos: Gain beauty Benefit directly from beauty Charm anyone

Destiny: Transform into a true monster and lose all humanity.
