Autoclave

Loading the autoclave

  1. The autoclave may be asleep overnight. The sleep on/off switch is on the left side of the machine. You can switch it on if you are the first person to use it, but the machine should go to sleep automatically every night.
  2. Before loading, open the autoclave and ensure that the circular screen plug at the very bottom of the chamber is clean and not clogged. If the plug is clogged/dirty, rinse it off in the sink and place it back in the chamber. This is extremely important— the plug is how the machine measures temperature/steam levels inside the chamber, so if it is clogged, the autoclave will not add the right amount of steam.
  3. Place your stuff inside.
  4. To close the chamber, twist the wheel on the autoclave as tightly shut as you can. Once the autoclave is successfully sealed, it should print out something like “jacket closed” on the printer paper and/or show that the jacket has been closed on the screen.
  5. To “log in” to the machine, press the username typing space to log in and select “USER 1” from the pop-up menu. No password/unique user ID is required.
  6. Once you have logged in, you can select your cycle. 3x gravity and 3x liquid cycles have been preloaded on the machine. You can select these from the “gravity” or “liquid” tabs, or from the favorites menu.

If you would like to modify a cycle or create your own, select one of the preloaded cycles. In order to change the time/type/temperature, simply select the variable you would like to change and a keypad will pop up where you can change the menu.

Feel free to modify the time or cycle type, but do not decrease the temperature below 251F / 121C.

  1. Press start on your cycle (green button on the screen). If the jacket was off (top right of the screen), it should automatically turn on after you start the cycle. It takes a second for the jacket to turn on, so this will add a little time to your cycle.

Opening the autoclave

  1. Once your cycle is complete, you may open the autoclave. The autoclave will not open if the pressure is >0 PSI. The screen should indicate when the cycle is done. If you are having trouble opening the autoclave, you can check the PSI gauge. This is at the top of the autoclave under a metal flap. On the top of the machine, lift the metal flap to check the PSI.
  2. Loosen the wheel. Steam should begin to release. Open the door slowly— begin by just cracking it.
  3. Make sure when you open the door completely it does not smash into the wall.
  4. Use the gloves that should be in the room to remove your stuff. Close the autoclave door but do not tighten it.

Troubleshooting

  • If you selected the wrong cycle, press “abort” on the screen. The jacket should depressurize (this will take a minute).
  • To reset a cycle from abort, you must open and shut the door to reset. You do not need to open the door entirely, just loosen and re-tighten the wheel to reset the cycle.
  • If steam beings to come out of the autoclave after you selected “start”, it is likely because the handle is not tight enough. As the seal on the autoclave wears this is more likely to happen. To fix this, pull the red e-stop plug to immediately stop the autoclave and prevent it from any action. While the autoclave is stopped, you can tighten the wheel further.
  • After the wheel has been tightened, twist to release the e-stop and the cycle should progress.
  • If you need maintenance help, the phone number of the company is on the top of the autoclave above the screen. It should list the phone number and the ID of the machine. Call for help and provide your machine ID number.

Glasswash

Loading the dishwasher

  1. Twist the green light button the activate start mode
  2. Open the glass wash door and load your stuff by partially pulling out the metal shelf. If you are worried about your stuff falling/moving around, there is a screen you can place on the level above your stuff. There is a secondary heavy screen tray (smaller) you can place directly on top of your glassware to stabilize it. Make sure both screens are clean.

If using powder detergent: Powder detergent is “not advisable” and cannot be placed in prior to the pre-wash step as it will just be washed away. It will apparently clog the pipes. If using it, make sure you remove the pre-wash stage.

If using liquid detergent: Liquid detergent should be added to a compartment in the back (which is currently not yet installed). Liquid detergent must be non-foaming. Make sure there is liquid detergent present in the machine. You can proceed with the cycle as normal.

  1. Select cycle. They are “all pretty much the same”
  2. Hit the red stop button on the screen to stop

If you want to pick a different cycle, you must press & hold the stop button to reset. This will take you back to the selection menu.

Troubleshooting

  • Phone number and equipment ID number on the machine above the screen
