BYOD Configuration
Build Your Own Dexcom app was originally made to overcome supported phone models list and to adjust some configuration parameters. You make a build request with the desired configuration on the web form and after submit you get a link to your custom built app in the email.
This is the preferred way how to get data from your Dexcom sensor to your watch. Dexcom Share cloud data source uses API from Dexcom G4 times, putting restrictions on Dexcom accounts credentials that some users are not able to overcome.
Note that G-Watch App does not work with the original Dexcom App as it doesn’t send collected values to other apps, so no integration is possible.
The version from the end of 2020 (Dec 27) of BYOD app got a functionality to broadcast data to other app. Currently it is included only in G6 version, but it can change in future.
Open the web form, and enter your email where to send the link to compiled BYOD app. In the next step (for International app version there is also a glucose unit selection step) select the AndroidAPS broadcast type or both:
Once this app is installed and you select the “Dexcom App” option in Data Source settings you will be prompted to grant permission to G-Watch Wear App to receive data from the installed BYOD app. You must grant this permission, otherwise G-Watch Wear App won’t be permitted to receive data from your BYOD app.
You can grant the permission also manually - open permissions settings for G-Watch App, go to “Other permissions” and grant permission to receive data from Dexcom App. On Android version 11 and above you always need to grant the permission manually.
If you do not see this permission in the list of permissions for G-Watch Wear App then you do not have installed your BYOD version properly, or you use wrong (old) version of BYOD, or you haven’t enabled broadcasts in the build configuration. Repeat the BYOD build and install it again.
If you are using Android APS on your phone and you use it also with G-Watch App, don’t forget to check also the option “Ignore glucose values from AAPS” to not receive values twice.
Be sure to watch David Green’s tutorial video how to configure G-Watch App with BYOD app.
Note: Currently, only G6 BYOD app has the ability to broadcast collected readings to other apps. If you use G5 system then you need to use other solution with G-Watch Wear App.
