This is done in the Flightgear menu: Autopilot->Route manager
Website like skyvector.com can save routes in GPX format on your PC and you can then load them up in route-manager. GPX format can also be used to load in HSD Lines, see Preplanning Dialog.

The HUD has several aids for following route.
The HSD will show the route and each steerpoint.
DED has a STPT page where you can view the coordinates of each steerpoint in the route.
It also has CRUS page that will show how much fuel you will have left when reaching destination.
- ICP Rocker switch (located on ICP panel below HUD in lower-left side)
- Up: Next steerpoint
- Down: Previous steerpoint
