What purpose does your design serve?

This design was intended to complete the tasks which required a metal pin to be removed.

What priorities did you have in your design? What design considerations did you have? What methodologies did you follow?

  • The magnet tool allows the pilot to complete the ghost net task.
  • The tool needed to be lightweight and it need to be viewed from the cameras. Also, it needed to not block any thruster to allow for optimal driving from the pilot.
  • The tool was designed for the size of the magnetic that were on hand.

What does your design connect to (mounting)?

  • The magnet tool is designed to be mounted to the right of the wide-angle camera.
  • It attaches to the frame via mounting holes and screws with the use of heat-set inserts.

What is it made out of? (construction)

What reference materials did you use? (Provide links to these)

What issues did you have? (in both design and assembly)

The original design did not stick out past the primary manipulator and thus caused it to be hard to use.

How did you go about integrating with electrical or software? What changes did you make?

Software needed to make sure it was in view of a camera. The pilots also needed to be able to use the tool well.

Other notes: what else should be mentioned?

  • Two prototypes were created and deemed equally acceptable. First of which was a net tool which would just be a pvc rectangle with a string net wrapped around. Next was a magnet tool which consisted of a weak round magnet laying around in the workspace.
  • Both were tested above the air and deemed viable as they were able to pull the pins out of a loose-gripping hand. Ultimately, a magnet tool was used as it was deemed more compact.

What errors/mistakes were made?

In the first print the magnet was not as strong due to the thickness of the wall in between was it was supposed to attach to and the magnet. This was changed to be thinner so that way the magnet could be more effective.

If you had to do it over again, what might you change?

If I had to do it again I would change the mounting location. A lot of the changes that were made were due to conflicts that could have been avoided if the tools were in a better area.

Tech Report Paragraph

The magnet tool was created with the goal of completing the ghost net task. Inside the magnet tool are 6 strong magnets in a 3x2 formation. The tool is mounted to the frame to the right of the wide angle camera and just within the viewframe. The placement of the tool had to take in consideration the locations of the Primary Manipulator, wide angle camera, and waterflow as a result of the thrusters. The design, made out of printed PLA has a thin wall to allow strong magnetic attraction between the tool itself and the metal pin that is to be removed. It is far enough away from the primary manipulator so that it does not interfere with any other items that may be grabbed during the duration of the competition. The placement also ensures that a significant portion of the cameras view remains unobstructed.
