Installation
- Download and unzip the latest version: (TODO).
- Go to the new kolproxy directory and start the kolproxy executable.
- Allow it if you're asked by your OS/firewall whether to let kolproxy run and accept network connections.
- Your default web-browser will pop up with the login page. Log in and play!
- (Alternatively you can open http://localhost:18481/ in your favorite browser if your computer isn't set up to launch the one you want.)
- You probably also want to click the kolproxy settings link from the main map to enable more features.
Kolproxy tries to make sure absolutely everything works correctly before doing anything. So if you manage to log in, kolproxy will usually work fine with no further technical issues. Usually you just have to unzip and run the program, but for some computer configurations it can sometimes be more difficult.
If it doesn't work, there's probably some minor issue with your operating system/firewall/computer configuration. If you have a problem like this, please tell Eleron about it and ask for help, so it can be fixed or listed here as a potential problem. You can try to open http://localhost:18481/kolproxy-test, a test URL that only checks whether your browser can connect to kolproxy. Check the kolproxy console output for any errors as well.
If you have very frequent network errors, you can try enabling the "slow HTTP" compatibility mode from the login page. This is not recommended for normal properly working systems, since everything will be slower, but it can allow kolproxy to work with badly made anti-virus programs, corporate proxies, network equipment, etc. It behaves in a way compatible with the older HTTP/1.0 instead of HTTP/1.1.
Some known things to look out for:
- USB stick or Dropbox: Don't play from an USB stick or a Dropbox directory. It makes file writing extremely slow, and kolproxy automatically stores settings on your KoL account anyway.
- Microsoft Security Essentials: If you're using Microsoft Security Essentials (you probably are if you're on a recent version of windows), create an exception for kolproxy. Otherwise it will occasionally slow down to a halt for up to 30 seconds before continuing. (Any hints on how to get SE to stop doing this to kolproxy would be very welcome. It still works, it just gets slowed down occasionally for some reason.)
- Kaspersky Anti-Virus: If you're using Kaspersky Anti-Virus you may get frequent network connection errors. This appears to be resolved by temporarily disabling the "Web Anti-Virus" portion of the security. This is a bug in the anti-virus program.
- AVG AntiVirus: On Windows 8, this has produced the error "listen: failed (Permission denied (WSAEACCESS))" when trying to start up kolproxy. Disabling AVG or adding an exception for kolproxy has not worked. (Trying to find a workaround.)
- Unzipping on Windows: It's not recommended to launch kolproxy from inside the zip archive, as there are some indications that this doesn't work correctly. Make sure all the files are properly extracted from the zip file *before* starting kolproxy (you can e.g. just make a brand new directory for each version, as the settings won't be lost).
Kolproxy is being continuously developed and new versions are released with new features. The version number at the top of the login page displays whether a new version is available. You can upgrade to a new version of kolproxy while in the middle of a run—just log out, download and unzip the new release, start up the new version and keep playing!
