Immediate inspiration was @pjz's comment in IRC.

As we're starting to add more funding options (Coinbase #2053, ACH debit #777) we need some way to say, "When my balance dips below $NN, add $YY using {coinbase,ACH Debit, credit card}." That's the sort of thing this ticket is about.

Raising to ★★☆ because of #2053 and #777 and #1486.

@whit537 your image is too blurry :P

Mocked this up in my browser. Do we need a more complex UI?

Last screenshot looks fine, though might want to emphasize the total amount more (bold?)

+1 from @ChimeraCoder on #862:

This comes via @chrishwiggins - the amount that will get charged to my card (or how often my card will be charged) is a function of both

  1. How much I am giving to others on Gittip
  2. How much other Gittip users are giving me
  3. How much money I already have in my account

These aren't hard to calculate, strictly speaking, but it might be nice to present this to the user, to make the charging patterns more predictable.

Chris compared it to Uber, where it's hard to know how much you'll pay until the ride is complete - not sure how illustrative that analogy is, but I can kind of see the point he's making.

Hah. Exactly what I would love to see. Currently spending around 15$ per week and having two people have to look and enter the receipts in our accounting. I'd love to just send 500$ or so at once and then be done for a year. Happy if you start charging me automatically smaller amounts if I run out, though. Then I could do the optimization of single big funding again later.

Does Gittip already do the converse: "When my balance rises above $1000, transfer $500 to my account."?

@webmaven We pay out when your Gittip balance is over $10 and you have a bank account attached.

You might at a minimum want to make that $10 threshold adjustable, then, to more easily allow for larger spur-of-the-moment one-time tips ("Hey, I've got $100, let's give $COOLPERSON $20!") knowing there is no CC fee or similar involved.

A more flexible rule that both adjusts the threshold and the amount transferred may make the bank transaction record a bit saner to examine, at least for people who are actually supporting themselves via Gittip. I don't know if that is actually a concern of the folks who are in that position, but simpler and shorter bank statements would be a huge plus for me in that situation. Bonus is that it can ensure that the account still always has enough in it for those spur-of-the-moment donations.

Prior work in #2299 if you want to revive or cherry-pick from that.

Closing in light of our decision to shut down Gratipay.

Thank you all for a great run, and I'm sorry it didn't work out! 😞 💃
