The RAVEnOUT script came to be from a desire to monitor the amount of power being used in a home. In my case, I had a new house that seemed to be using an inordinate amount of power. I had a desire to minimise the amount of power our household was using - partly for the environment and partly to save money!

The original script was a python script that displayed on the screen power usage, and fed data to Cosm (now 'Xively'). The new script was a total re-write using Perl - chosen simply because I had more experience with that, although I happily acknowledge that python is probably a better choice!
