About The Pull Request

this reverts #14695 because of a couple reasons.

Why It's Good For The Game

1st, because it's fun.
2nd, because it gives laser pouches an actual reason to exist, especially with backpack batteries, laser pouches are hilariously useless as they exist right now. every time I've been ingame and talked to people about it, the response has been overwhelmingly negative about the change, and we're not entirely sure why it was made in the first place.
the whole knockdown = gun disconnected thing was a solid balancing mechanic, and this gives more realistic usability to more energy hungry lasermodes.

3rd. remove or move them to req if this isn't enough, because they have no reason to exist as they do
4th, because I said I would

Changelog

🆑
revert: laser pouches being next to worthless

this was bad.

1st, because it's fun.

Not a good reason, also subjective

because it gives laser pouches an actual reason to exist, especially with backpack batteries, laser pouches are hilariously useless as they exist right now

Don't exactly disagree, but they do kinda act like a magazine pouch with one more mag but only for laser weapons so eh. Was a fine enough reason to keep them around when backpack wasn't a thing.

every time I've been ingame and talked to people about it, the response has been overwhelmingly negative about the change, and we're not entirely sure why it was made in the first place.

I think reading the PR you are reverting would give you a good idea.

the whole knockdown = gun disconnected thing was a solid balancing mechanic, and this gives more realistic usability to more energy hungry lasermodes.

If by more realistic usability you mean bypasses the whole balance of the modes yeah sure it gives usability.

3rd. remove or move them to req if this isn't enough, because they have no reason to exist as they do

Would prefer them removed honestly. Alternatively you could make them fit in places that aren't pouches, like bags. Make them act as a psuedo packet but for laser weapons. Would obviously need a rename and move to the boxes tab in vendor but I think it'd be a fine enough existence, since they're superceded by the backpack anyway. Reverting this change would just mean.. why would you ever sacrifice a back slot when you can just use a pocket slot anyway?

4th, because I said I would

the backpack is a thing.

the one that's overwhelmingly disliked both in and out of the game?

the first thing I did was read the PR to see if it would convince me that this was necessary. it didn't. it actually convinced me to go ahead with this- the reactions both in the PR and ingame are very negative, because this removes a fun item that allows for more interesting builds. as people have brought up, like the laser sniper, which is basically impractical with how much energy it uses per shot.
there was no attempt to fix the issues brought up, it was just merged anyway.

If by more realistic usability you mean bypasses the whole balance of the modes yeah sure it gives usability.

these have their own balancing levers because there obviously is a benefit to having larger magazines. 1st. because lasers are unquestionably frontline weapons, as you cannot use them behind people, being knocked down is a common occurrence. this means that every time you're knocked down with a laser pouch, you no longer have a functioning weapon. this is a huge weakness, and xeno players absolutely used to exploit it. second, you can only carry two of these things at all. ever. at the cost of your pouches. it's a huge sacrifice.
secondly, I personally think laser modes benefit from this. consider the laser MG, the most commonly run laser weapon, because of the high efficency, it's not an effective supression weapon despite this because xenos will happily walk right through it. on melting mode, they actually take a second and back off. with a melting MG and a pouch, you can actually effectively suppress xenos. I've also never once seen anyone complain because of this. I'm pretty sure that this is a change that most xeno players haven't even noticed.

because the pack provides something that's incomparable to the pouches? I could remove the charging function to make their distinction even more clear.
removing things is bad, and I guarantee nobody will run this if it moves into req. it's, as someone said in the original PR, almost identical to a magazine pouch, but with a downside of being disconnected when knocked down.

the one that's overwhelmingly disliked both in and out of the game?

Absolutely irrelevant to the merits of the arguments within the PR. People liking their overpowered toys does not make them good for the game.

this means that every time you're knocked down with a laser pouch, you no longer have a functioning weapon.

Yeah which can be remedied by just clicking the pouch.. not that tough.

second, you can only carry two of these things at all. ever.

The ammo box in question... Doesn't really matter when you never have to reload in actual combat if you make sure to come into the fight with a decently charged one.

as people have brought up, like the laser sniper, which is basically impractical with how much energy it uses per shot.

If you think some guns use too much energy per shot change the guns, not introduce an extendo mag which makes weapons that didn't have such issues have a comical amount of ammo.

removing things is bad

No.

almost identical to a magazine pouch

And no. It would be identical if magpouch automatically loaded mag after mag for you automatically.
