  • Need set rules/criteria for the day: With only two teams, we were loose on the rules, which worked out well. A larger group would require that we tighten up.

  • Use a webcam for presenting mobile apps (similar to Finovate). Set this up beforehand.

  • Provide some tips for newcomers. As much as this is an opportunity to strut your technical skills, it is also an opportunity to practice presenting new ideas and products. The Bus Riders utilized user stories very well.

  • Judging

  • Provide a printed rubric for the judges.

DAWSONVILLE

  • The Dawson County/Dawsonville Saturday event final count was 460. According to the counters we had over 500 through the doors but some of those turned out to be duplicates. Very few actually were interested in participating as part of the hacking competition although there was quite a bit of interest at the competition information table. I think most people locally just did not understand the concept. We also suffered from a lack of teams because both the local high school ended classes the week prior and the University IT and Math Departments declined to provide teams because the semester ended May 24 so their usual teams were not on campus. They all were interested but could not get teams put together since classes were out.

  • By in large the 460 people came to attend the Maker Fair which included 3D Printing, robotics, computer construction and a host of other activities.

  • This part of the effort is considered a huge success because this is the first time we have tried to have a Maker Fair in a very rural setting. To have that many people show up and have many of those people participate in learning about civic hacking, new technologies and innovation was quite an accomplishment.

  • We are attempting this morning to download pictures from various people and to further analyze the event.

MIDDLE GEORGIA

  • The winners of the competition worked on the EPA Safe Drinking Water Challenge. They worked on an app that would take an address and map out the surrounding water sources and report any that had violations with the EPA for unclean drinking water. When they submit their work, I'll make sure to share it with you. Winners were: Brett Jenson, James McMurran, Kim Folsom, and Benjamin Rich.

  • Macon Connect is awesome!! It's a mentorship platform targeted at high school and college age kids to encourage entrepreneurship in the community. Generally, they want to give those kids a vision, uncover their dreams and passions so they will be encouraged to stay in school and even become entrepreneurs through the process. At each step of the way, the user will be mentored by a local teacher or other expert that will help them uncover their potential in one-month segments (ideally, each month they would work on something different in order to uncover new skills). There are dozens of resources that their app links to that already have great tools for, including Macon & Bibb county's basic guide to starting a business.

  • Michael Rosario, Charles Melvin, and Chris Marney worked on Macon Connect. I'm really proud of them. Their work so far is here.

  • The third team worked on the Farmers Market Directory & Local and Regional Food Systems challenge. They've built a mobile app that searches for local farmers' markets near a certain ZIP code or by the user's current location. It's working and it looks great! I've attached some screenshots of this app in action. Chip Bell and April Lundy worked on this one.
