- -14- Project/Story Description:
- -15- How Will This Project Have Impact:
- Use Impact section in http://www.rhok.org/problems/simple-peace-corps-medical-supplies-order-form
- -16- What Happens Next?:
- Atlanta team will work closely with DC Peace Corps office to plan out the best way to pilot the app and get feedback back.
- Atlanta will hold monthly Hack Nights to support future development.
- Peace Corps will create initial pilot training package and test with identified pilot countries that have had the most issues with medical supply ordering.
- -17- Who Does This Project or Story Affect?:
- The ~8000 Peace Corps volunteers in the field plus the 300+ members of the Peace Corps Medical Unit spread across 76 countries. At the same time this indirectly effects the 8000+ communities that Peace Corps Volunteers serve. Happy, healthy volunteers are much more effective in their jobs.
- -18- How Might This Project or Story Create Value for Individuals?: >
- Replace a slow error-prone paper-based system.
- The idea is to eliminate the burden on the Peace Corps Medical Officer who plays a central role in the emotional, physical and logistical support of the volunteer. By automating the low level tasks of non-prescription medical supplies that currently are placed via email, phone call or text message each taking up valuable time, it frees up the PCMO to give more attention to more important issues.
- -19- How Does This Project or Story Show the Value of Collaboration Between Communties and/or Corporations, and/or Governments?:
- Jumpstart a software project in collaboration with Government contacts.
- Add innovative solutions to real life Peace Corps problems.
- Peace Corps struggles to keep up with the changing world of technology due to our limited budget, and 5-year cap on all employees that is written into the Peace Corps Act. This collaboration between current and former Peace Corps Volunteers with the civic hackers allows the agency to keep up and provides a space for outside the box thinking and risk taking that is not easily done with little resources going towards research and development.
