Websocket Server

CircleCI

A minimal Websockets Server in Python with no external dependencies.

  • Python2 and Python3 support
  • Clean simple API
  • Multiple clients
  • No dependencies

Notice that this implementation does not support the more advanced features like SSL etc. The project is focused mainly on making it easy to run a websocket server for prototyping, testing or for making a GUI for your application.

Installation

You can use the project in three ways.

  1. Copy/paste the websocket_server.py file in your project and use it directly
  2. pip install git+https://github.com/o-alexandre-felipe/python-websocket-server (latest code)
  3. pip install websocket-server (might not be up-to-date)

For coding details have a look at the server.py example and the API.

Usage

You can get a feel of how to use the websocket server by running

PYTHONPATH=$PWD python examples/server.py

Then just open examples/client.html in your browser and you should be able to send and receive messages. If you open examples/client_hdr.html and type as message the name of some HTTP header the server will respond with the corresponding value. If you open examples/client_rev.html it will respond with the characters of the text sent reversed and interleaved with dots.

For an example of event notification

PYTHONPATH=$PWD python examples/

The texts sent through examples/notify.html will generate notifications in an event source. In the page examples/listen.html it is possible to add a listener to any event source by sending two numbers, the first number is the listener identifier and the second is the handler priority.

Testing

Run all tests

tox

API

The API is simply methods and properties of the WebsocketServer class.

WebsocketServer

The WebsocketServer can be initialized with the below parameters.

port - The port clients will need to connect to.

host - By default the 127.0.0.1 is used which allows connections only from the current machine. If you wish to allow all network machines to connect, you need to pass 0.0.0.0 as hostname.

loglevel - logging level to print. By default WARNING is used. You can use logging.DEBUG or logging.INFO for more verbose output.

Properties

Property Description
clients A list of client

Methods

Method Description Takes Gives
set_fn_new_client() Sets a callback function that will be called for every new client connecting to us function None
set_fn_client_left() Sets a callback function that will be called for every client disconnecting from us function None
set_fn_message_received() Sets a callback function that will be called when a client sends a message function None
send_message() Sends a message to a specific client. The message is a simple string. client, message None
send_message_to_all() Sends a message to all connected clients. The message is a simple string. message None

Callback functions

Set by Description Parameters
set_fn_new_client() Called for every new client connecting to us client, server
set_fn_client_left() Called for every client disconnecting from us client, server
set_fn_message_received() Called when a client sends a message client, server, message

The client passed to the callback is the client that left, sent the message, etc. The server might not have any use to use. However it is passed in case you want to send messages to clients.

Example:

import logging
from websocket_server import WebsocketServer

def new_client(client, server):
	server.send_message_to_all("Hey all, a new client has joined us")

server = WebsocketServer(13254, host='127.0.0.1', loglevel=logging.INFO)
server.set_fn_new_client(new_client)
server.run_forever()

WebsocketClientBehavior

This class is used to determine the behavior of the server for a given connection. The WebsocketClientBehavior implements the default behavior, calling the server callbacks.

A class inheriting WebsocketClientBehavior can be implemented and associated to a given URL so that one instance of the new class is created when the handshake of a connection to the given url is finished.

Properties

Property Description
id a unique integer assigned by the server to this connection
origin the origin stated in the request headers
handler a reference to the handler of this connection
address (addr, port)

Events

There are three methods that are invoked on specific events for the connection

on_open

Is invoked just after the hand shake is finished, it is recommended to use this method for instance initialization instead of the constructor method __init__, if you choose to override the __init__ method you must take care of using the same method signature as the WebsocketClientBehavior and to initialize the class members consistently so that it can be used by the WebsocketServer.

on_text

This method is invoked when the connection receives a text package.

on_close

This method is invoked when the connection is closed.

origin_validator

This method is ivoked during the construction to give the developer a chance to close the connection if the origin is not desired.

Methods

send_text

This method makes possible to send a packet with text data

WebsocketClientBehavior implementation event

class revBhv(WebsocketClientBehavior):
  '''
    Set a different behavior
  '''
  def on_open(self):
    print('Connection (%d) open' % (self.id))

  def on_close(self):
    print('Connection (%d) closed' % (self.id));

  def on_text(self, msg):
    '''
      if the text sent through msg is in the request headers
      respond with that header.
    '''
    self.send_text('.'.join(msg[::-1]));

  def origin_validator(self, origin):
    print('The origin is: %s' % repr(origin))
    return True;

# users connecting to 127.0.0.1:9001/reverse are served with revBhv
server.behaviors['/reverse'] = revBhv;
server.run_forever();
