I am putting this change on a separate branch because https://github.com/marinebon/data-management-checklists is in early draft.

The checklist process I am envisioning is outlined in this flow chart from within that repo.
I am curious if this aligns well with your thoughts, @MathewBiddle

First off. How did you make those diagrams?! That is a really cool presentation and I love that the 'code' is a relatively simple .md file.

The general flow looks alright. However, I'm not sure about the register dataset by creating GitHub issue

is right. That points to, yet another, repository. I do like the concept, because we can use issue templates to add checkboxes to check off when specific steps in the process have been completed (eg. BioEco layer registered, raw data shared/archived, data mobilized to OBIS, added to MBON Data Portal, etc.). But, I was hoping to not create another place to log stuff but use the BioEco portal as how I'm thinking this github issue will work.

Another comment is that the 'Host data on ERDDAP' isn't explicit for gridded spatiotemporal data. It works really well with that data type, but it's not limited to that.

I really like the thematic pieces you've included here. I assume each of those will have their own workflow too? For example, we are striving to have some automated mechanism for ATN -> OBIS, so we might not need the manual DwC alignment there. There will be similar variations for each of these thematic pieces.

Visualizing this in one big diagram is getting my wheels spinning. Thank you for doing this!

I'm hoping we can figure out a way to link the BioEco piece back into the DwC alignment -> OBIS/GBIF so it's not just a one-off activity.

Also, MBON Portal should be able to grab FAIR data. As long as it's FAIR, we should be able to pull it in.

FAIR - Finable Accessible Interoperable and Reusable.

It currently isn't restricted to only ERDDAP data and I don't see that changing in the future. (we're pulling in OBIS datasets and NCEI datasets).

These diagrams work using the mermaid.js markup language. It can be put directly into a markdown file as a mermaid code chunk and the diagrams get rendered automatically.

summary of changes based on your feedback:

  1. rm github issue from "Register Dataset" node
  2. link out from "register dataset" node to a .md that can detail bio-eco usage
  3. replace ERDDAP mentions with more general "gridded data hosting"
  4. link out from gridded data hosting node(s) to a .md listing ERDDAP and other recommended hosting software

Correct. I would like for each process here to link out to a .md including a checklist or another diagram.

I'm hoping we can figure out a way to link the BioEco piece back into the DwC alignment -> OBIS/GBIF so it's not just a one-off activity.

I am uncertain how to connect it back in.
Perhaps the metadata originally put into BioEco can be used to help generate the metadata required for OBIS/GBIF.
