strings.txt

If you want to fix an existing entry in the user interface localization or add a new one, strings folder is the way to go. You will most likely want to edit the main strings.txt file but take a look at the others too. Among them are the files that hold translations for brands (such as McDonald's and Starbucks) and types of objects on the map (such as barrier-gate and historic-monument).

Few things to remember:

  • "en" language should always go first and "ru" should always go second. The order of other languages can be copied from an existing translation.
  • "comment" field is for other translators to understand the context.
  • "tag" field is to list platforms where the translation is used.
  • When adding translations to the types of map objects, please also consider improving the corresponding entries in the categories.txt files.

After you edit a *strings.txt file, please commit your changes (suggested commit message is [strings] Fixed translations.), and then run tools/unix/generate_localization.sh script from repository root. It will generate correct translations which should be in a separate commit (for easier future merge/rebase). Suggested second commit message is [strings] Generated translations.
