Switching to gradle solves the issue maven imposes regarding it's inability to provide compile-time-only dependencies to tests. Additionally, using it, you'll get to enjoy the plethora of other benefits gradle has. This pr is ontop of #1, as this pr aims to solve an issue it "creates". Regardless of whether the other pr is accepted or not, switching to gradle will be beneficial.
