On this wiki, you'll find materials and resources for the "Data Audioization" session at SRCCON 2015, facilitated by Jordan Wirfs-Brock and Lauren Benichou.
You can view our slides here.
In this session, we will rapidly prototype our own audioizations/sonifications. You have two datasets to choose from:
This dataset, from Popup Archive's Audiosear.ch podcast transcription tool, contains the weekly number of mentions of real and fictional people (i.e. Don Draper, Terry Gross) in the top performing podcasts for February 2015 through June 2015.
The data was compiled by Shindo Strzelczyk of Popup Archive.
This dataset of Marvel and DC comic book characters was originally published by FiveThirtyEight. (You can also find it in this repo.) It includes a catalog of characters with information such as gender, hero/villain status, when the character was introduced and how often the character has appeared.
Check out Walt Hickey's original article on FiveThirtyEight analyzing and visualizing the data, "Comic Books Are Still Made By Men, For Men And About Men."
We've collected as many examples of data audioization as we could find (honestly, there aren't a lot of them...) on this Tumblr, Listen To Data.
Have other examples? Tweet them to Jordan - @jordanwb.
TODO - Finish adding tools and links Here are some tools and software that might be useful as you rapidly prototype a sonification of the comic book character data:
- SoniPy - TODO add description
- ChucK - TODO add description
- MIDITime
- audiolyzR - Sonification package for R (demo, blog article)
- Online Theremin
- HTML5 Drum Machine
- Audiosauna - Browser-based sound studio
- Audiotool - Another browser-based sound studio
- Audacity - Free desktop sound editing software
- Draw music - Several of apps (many of them free) for turning doodles into sound/music
Here are some useful articles:
- Data-Driven DJ - Brian Foo's experiments with data and music, with detailed notes on his process
- Audification/Sonification - An overview from Stephen Malinowski
- The Sonification Handbook - A free, downloadable book
Coming soon! If you'd like, we'll post your projects (in whatever form they reach by the end of the session) here.
