Spike moving to this new extensibility framework. This would allow the extension to go out of process, which takes many of the painful constraints off its dependency versioning.
Unfortunately it's quite a bit of effort to move, and the extensibility features needed seem incomplete still. e.g. The options page stuff is still in preview.

I don't have the time to complete this, just putting it here for reference in case anyone does.
