Security

This release contains a security fix for CVE-2024-29018, a potential data exfiltration from 'internal' networks via authoritative DNS servers.

Bug fixes and enhancements

  • CVE-2024-29018: Do not forward requests to external DNS servers for a container that is only connected to an 'internal' network. Previously, requests were forwarded if the host's DNS server was running on a loopback address, like systemd's 127.0.0.53. moby/moby#47589

  • plugin: fix mounting /etc/hosts when running in UserNS. moby/moby#47588

  • rootless: fix open /etc/docker/plugins: permission denied. moby/moby#47587

  • Fix multiple parallel docker build runs leaking disk space. moby/moby#47527

Summary:

The provided code changes primarily involve updating the dependencies in the go.mod and go.sum files for the vault-plugin-secrets-dockerhub module. The key changes include updating the Go version, as well as updating several dependencies to their latest versions. These dependency updates are generally a good security practice, as they can help address known vulnerabilities and improve the overall security posture of the application.

From an application security perspective, the changes do not appear to introduce any obvious security concerns. However, it's important to carefully review the changes to the dependencies, especially for any security-related libraries or components, to ensure that the updates do not introduce any new security vulnerabilities or breaking changes that could impact the application's security. Additionally, having a comprehensive testing suite and security review process in place is recommended to validate the changes before merging them into the main codebase.

Files Changed:

  1. go.mod: The Go version has been updated from 1.21 to 1.22.5, and several dependencies have been updated to newer versions, including github.com/docker/docker, github.com/stretchr/testify, and various go.opentelemetry.io dependencies.
  2. go.sum: The changes in this file update the dependencies, including updates to github.com/cenkalti/backoff/v4, github.com/docker/docker, github.com/sirupsen/logrus, google.golang.org/grpc, and the addition of several go.opentelemetry.io dependencies.
