Releases: Vortyne/pureRGB
PureRGB - v2.4.5
See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS START----
Scroll to the bottom of this page and download the IPS patch file for the version you want from the file list below. Use Lunar IPS to patch pokemon blue for PureBlue or PureGreen. Patch pokemon red for PureRed.
Always use these patch files on the original english game. Don't try to use any on a game that's already been patched.
----SETUP INSTRUCTIONS END----
Any v2.0 or higher save file should work in this new version - but I would recommend loading the save normally rather than loading a save state. You may experience strange behaviour if you load a save state during something that I have changed between v2.0 and the current version. If you are stuck in place on loading the save in the new version, use Fly, Teleport, or Pocket Abra to fix the issue. If you get a really bad bug on loading your save, try going to somewhere else on the old version (Viridian city pokemon center is a good choice), and saving there instead, then loading on the new version again.
v2.4.5 Patch Notes
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: When exiting the SS Anne after getting CUT, the "SS Anne Leaving" animation is hidden by a black screen until it completes. FIXED - Now resets color palettes to avoid the black screen. The black screen was caused by a "deferred loading" setup I used to hide tile blocks getting replaced on first loading many maps - the screen would remain black until the map script runs once. In some cases with scripts that run immediately on entering a map I have to manually reset the palettes to avoid a black screen.
- BUG: "Super Effective" "Not Very Effective" etc. applies to SONICBOOM and SEISMIC TOSS. FIXED - They will ignore effectiveness messages as intended. I accidentally removed these moves' effects from an array that prevented an effectiveness message from showing up for them (this oversight happened when modifying Tri Attack in version 2.3.0)
PureRGB - v2.4.4
See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.

v2.4.4 Patch Notes
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- BUG: In Seafoam islands, for some reason you can exit surfing onto a rock ridge corner. FIXED - collision detection works properly for that tile now
- BUG: When your own pokemon faints, leech seed gets cleared on the opponent. FIXED - leech seed will not get cleared
Fixes for Bugs in the original game:
- BUG: When a glitch pokemon gets loaded, uncompressing its broken sprite data can corrupt hall of fame data. FIXED - cannot corrupt hall of fame data anymore
- BUG: After obtaining a fossil in mt moon B2F, the trainers on that level lose their sight range. FIXED - they keep their sight range now

Patch Notes
New Features:
==NEW AREAS / EVENTS==
-
You can phone home, professor oak, even your rival from the telephones in Celadon City's Department Store. You can choose how the conversations play out, and they even can have some subsequent small events based on what you choose when you go back to PALLET TOWN!
-
The urban legend - Bills Garden - was added into the game! It only is accessible once you become champ. You'll find some amusing stuff there. Visit it a couple of times! What you find might change!
-
Added an entirely new top secret area - has to do with MEWTWO. You can only get there after becoming champ and finding some other secret stuff first. I recommend bringing MEWTWO and maybe even MEW with you...you might find something really interesting if you do. This area has a new tileset, new music...very fancy. THIS TOOK FOREVER TO IMPLEMENT
-
Added a new NPC in a new basement area of the Pokemon Tower. You can only get there after saving Mr Fuji. Before that there's a ROCKET blocking the door. This NPC can curse your GENGAR to make it look like a HAUNTER again. Funnily enough, this doesn't affect its stats at all. It's just a visual curse. Another NPC in a house in Lavender can make it go back to normal.
==QUALITY OF LIFE==
-
Surf will now stay active until you load another map. You can keep entering and exiting water without re-selecting to use surf. Just walk onto the water and you'll start surfing automatically. In some areas with surfing indoors, it'll remember you used surf between maps too (examples: seafoam islands, cerulean cave, safari zone)
-
More info was added to Bills PC - mostly about how many slots are used in your current box. The CHANGE BOX menu was revamped visually. When you change boxes, you can see how many pokemon are in every single box. You can permanently dismiss the "changing a box will save the game, is this OK?" message if you want.
-
When you catch a pokemon, it will tell you how many slots are left in the current box.
-
When you try to release a pokemon, you will have to press START to confirm the release. Helps avoid accidentally releasing pokemon.
-
The snappiness of BILL's PC and Player's PC menus has been improved. Some text prints a lot faster when you are depositing/withdrawing pokemon/items.
==VISUALS==
-
New alternate front sprite options for RATICATE, ABRA, CLOYSTER, KOFFING, EXEGGCUTE, and ELECTABUZZ
-
The sprite options menus were simplified. Now all the front sprite options are a child of the sprite options page. Hit "EDIT" on "FRONT SPRITES" in the sprite options page to change front sprite options.
-
Enhanced the following spaceworld backsprites: ARCANINE, CATERPIE, CHARMELEON, DODRIO, DODUO, DRAGONAIR, DRAGONITE, EKANS, GOLDEEN, GRAVELER, KAKUNA, MAGMAR, MANKEY, MEOWTH, NIDORAN(F), NIDORAN(M), PIDGEOT, PIDGEOTTO, PRIMEAPE, SEAKING, SHELLDER, VENONAT, VILEPLUME
-
Enhanced the following front sprites slightly: EKANS, MAGNEMITE, SHELLDER
-
Enhanced the following alternate front sprites: CLOYSTER
-
Added new optional overworld sprites for Erika and LT.Surge. Use the MENU ICONS option to toggle these just like all other new overworld sprites. Thanks to Mord for most of the work on these overworld sprites.
-
Toggling the MENU ICONS setting will now reload sprites in the current map too on the fly. You don't have to reload the map to see the differences anymore.
-
Improved the visual effects of pushing the truck out of the way in Vermilion City to access MEW.
-
You can see "The side of the building" from the roof of Celadon City Department Store and Celadon Mansion.
-
The new NPC who gives you LAPRAS in celadon hotel now walks away when he leaves.
-
TELEPORT's animation was slightly modified
-
BLIZZARD's animation was slightly modified
==BATTLE CHANGES==
- TELEPORT does something in battle now. If you have more than 1 pokemon, the user will switch out and you can choose another to send in its place. On top of that, the pokemon that used TELEPORT will then heal 25% health. For wild opponent pokemon only, it still works as it used to work and they will run away if they use it.
==AUDIO CHANGES==
-
Added Giovanni's Theme (unused track from pokemon yellow) into the game when you encounter Giovanni. You have to turn on the new OG+ Music option to hear this track.
-
Added a visual effect and sound effect when you push a rock down a hole in seafoam/victory road.
-
Added a sound effect when you fall down a hole in seafoam/victory road.
==MINOR TWEAKS==
- Lance now has a SEADRA instead of VICTREEBEL
BUGFIXES
Fixes for Bugs in the original game:
- FIXED: Tileblocks being replaced in places (Victory Road, Cinnabar) could cause a lot of in-game lag.
- FIXED: Sound effects during text wouldn't work with instant text setting
- FIXED: Sometimes you can see a tileblock being replaced visually when the map first loads. Example: victory road
Fixes for Bugs I caused:
- FIXED: Movedex quiz had a question with an option overlapping the text box border
- FIXED: Repel steps decrementing when just changing direction in the overworld rather than just moving around
- FIXED: The TM name loader could cause crashing in rare scenarios.
- FIXED: Prevented an added trainer in route 2 from blocking you (easy to avoid even if they did, but may as well)
- FIXED: Visual bug when falling down holes (appeared to be already fallen for a moment)
- FIXED: Visual bug during Cinnabar Color Changer dialogue
- FIXED: Visual bug when opening a pokedex entry, going to town map from the pokedex, and then going back to the overworld.
- FIXED: On Route 9, you can't jump the ledge onto the cut tree anymore.
- FIXED: Mist would erroneously make Tri Attack miss.

- Improve screen whiteout behaviour on GBC
PureRGB - v2.3.2
See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.

----PATCH NOTES----
v2.3.2 changes
- Repositioned some originally cut off or floating original back sprites so they aren't cut off or floating
- Enhance a bunch of spaceworld back sprites (golem, graveler, gyarados, kadabra, flareon, dragonite, geodude, hitmonlee, muk, nidoking, nidoqueen, onix, porygon, raichu, tentacruel)
- Enhance an already enhanced front sprite (poliwag)
- Slightly enhance scyther's original back sprite
- Improve the appearance of the box that shows in list menus when showing what move a TM contains. Make it hide again if scrolling over a non-TM move after viewing a TM's contents.
- After obtaining the thunderbadge, stat down moves of enemies no longer have a hardcoded 25% chance to miss. Makes the game a bit harder after the beginning.
- Improve Haze's effect: In addition to its original effect, it also makes the user immune to PSYCHIC-type moves until it switches out. Learned by some poison pokemon. The black mist released disrupts psychic pokemon's mental manipulation and telepathy.
- Improve Mist's effect: In addition to its original effect, it also makes the user immune to NORMAL-type and FIGHTING-type moves until it switches out. The sparkling ice particles in the mist grant ethereal qualities to the user, making them take on properties of a ghostly being.
- Improve Mist and Haze's animations.
v2.3.2 bugfixes
(not original game bugs)
- Fixed a bug I introduced in bill's computer eevee pokedex entries menu script
- Fixed a bug I introduced with the AI using hyper beam causing them to get stuck in the recharge state
- Fix a bug I introduced with displaying TM names after switching item indices with SELECT in the items menu.
(original game bugs)
- Fixed an original game visual glitch when using MIMIC and selecting a move to copy.
- Reduce original game's wobble of sprites in the overworld that happens while you are walking around. This new fix may cause occasional minor visual glitches and is still being ironed out.
- Fixed a bug in the original game: defrosting can use a glitch move. Instead of using a glitch move, if the move the game thinks the player should use is not in the current pokemon's moves, it'll do nothing instead.
- Fix a rare bug from the original game where booting up a TM, exiting, and booting up another could crash the game.
PureRGB - v2.3.1
Fixed an issue with selecting HMs in the party menu in this 2.3.1 release. So if you're having that problem, get this new release.
v2.3.0 - New feature release, new big features:
- An entirely new mode of the pokedex called the MOVEDEX tracks which moves you have seen in the game and shows detailed information about each move. They show up if you've witnessed a move's animation. To unlock the movedex, speak to a teacher in a new basement classroom of the school house in viridian city. You need the pokedex to receive the movedex. To access the movedex, open the pokedex and press START after having unlocked it.
- A new area was added in the basement of the Viridian Schoolhouse. Acts as a sort of help area in the early game, with more info about basic stuff in the game like stats, type matchups, STAB, etc. It's also where you unlock the MOVEDEX.
- The AREA function of the pokedex was greatly enhanced. It now separates Grass+Cave encounters and Surfing encounters. You can switch between them with the LEFT/RIGHT buttons on this menu.
- The AREA function also can show fishing locations, but you must first talk to both the Fuchsia City fishing guru and the Route 12 fishing guru to receive this new feature. It shows Old Rod, Good Rod, and Super Rod locations as separate states that can be cycled through with LEFT/RIGHT.
- The Data page in the pokedex was enhanced. You can press left/right to go to the previous/next pokemon in the list if you've seen it. You can also press SELECT when viewing data in the pokedex of a pokemon you've caught to view its back sprite and toggle back and forth between front and back sprite.
- Restored cut content: Seafoam Island now uses unused icy ridge tiles from the cavern tileset.
- Restored cut content: Soldier trainer class from Spaceworld 1997, added in vermilion gym
See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.

- Tri attack now has a 10% chance of freezing, a 10% chance of paralysis, and a 10% chance of burn.
- Enhanced TRI ATTACK animation.
- Struggle was made TYPELESS. Does 1x damage against all types.
Bugfixes:
- Fixed town map text for rock tunnel
- Hall of fame script now checks the correct property when figuring out whether to use spaceworld back sprites or not
- A strange collision detection code bug was fixed, improving performance somewhat when walking on tiles that caused it to occur
- Fix a collision detection bug in cerulean cave that existed in the original game
- Fixed super fang's updated effect so it doesn't instakill pokemon with >255 hp due to a rounding error
v2.3.1 bugfixes:
- Fixed a menu selection bug from a previous fix that yellow version made for menu selection that was used
- Corrected an error with field move selection I caused that caused Strength, Flash, Dig, and Teleport to use the wrong field move
- Fixed low health alarm sound delaying behaviour
PureRGB - v2.2.1
v2.2.0 - New feature release, two new features:
- The pokedex has more info about pokemon than before. You can see the typing of seen pokemon. You can see both the typing and base stats for caught pokemon. This data shows up on a new third page in the pokedex.
- Two more pages of front sprite configuration options were added to the options menus. Now you can choose between front sprites for 12 more pokemon with multiple good options. The navigation of these options pages was also improved with a next/back button and a page number indicator.
See https://github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/blob/master/FEATURES.md for the full features documentation.

Other minor features in 2.2.0:
- Overworld Voltorb in the power plant will look like voltorb visually in the overworld when encountered (But only if you have OG+ icon sprite option turned on)
- The overworld Voltorb in fuchsia city zoo will look like voltorb when you talk to the NPC near its enclosure (but only if you have OG+ icon sprite option turned on)
- The fossil pokemon in fuchsia city zoo will look like kabuto visually if you chose the helix fossil (but only if you have OG+ icon sprite option turned on)
- The fossil pokemon in fuchsia city zoo will move a bit when talking to the NPC near its enclosure (but only if you have OG+ icon sprite option turned on)
- A bunch of pokemon's front or back sprites were enhanced slightly.
v2.2.1 release additions
Bugfixes:
- When the low health alarm is active (even if silent) it won't cut off the menu selection sound when selecting "Bag" in battle anymore.
- When using rest statuses are healed correctly now
- Sprite Options Menu 4 GRAVELER text fixed to say RB / RG instead of RB / Y
Minor changes to moves:
(Visual)
- Improved Horn Drill / Drill Peck animations (now it looks like a spiraling horn/beak instead of the same spheres used in focus energy)
- Improved Blizzard Animation (Now will show snowflakes blowing in the first stage of the animation)
- Improved Poison Sting / Pin Missile animations (Now will show pins shooting at the opponent)
- Improved Spore animation (Now will make spores cover the whole screen by the end)
- Improved Twineedle Animation (Two barbs will strike the enemy now)
- Added a small animation to Mirror Move (a quick mirror-like barrier will show up with a sound effect before using the mirrored move)
- Improved Static Snag Animation (A static electrical field will cover the screen for a moment at the end)
- Improved Poison Gas animation (Now will look like gas is being shot at the opponent instead of little smog clouds)
(Move Effects)
- Bonemerang now has a 30% chance of lowering opponent's speed
- Mimic has been improved: now it will use the attack that was mimic'd on the same turn you mimic it
- Mirror Move has been improved: it is a priority move now and will always use the previous move the opponent managed to use - even if the pokemon that used that move fainted. You can repeatedly use mirror move of the same move if that move defeats the opponent pokemon before it can use another.
- Similarly, AI has been set to avoid using mirror move on the very first turn of battle because it will most likely fail since the opponent most likely wouldn't have used a move yet that turn due to the new priority the move has.
- Super Fang has been improved: It now deals a set 2/3 of the opponent's health instead of 1/2. Useful for catching rarer pokemon!
