IIRC there was some discussion on the NixOS Gnome Matrix channel about replacement tools, but it was fairly uncontroversial given that upstream has effectively abandoned it and moved on.

Also, there is a post-mortem at https://discourse.nixos.org/t/should-we-consider-a-deprecation-removal-policy-for-nixpkgs/17516

Fun fact: today I learned that Ubuntu dropped gksu already in 18.04(!)
