Performing a clean install of Ubuntu

Backing up Files and Settings

  • Click on the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > backup
  • Click next and select the Back up files and settings.
  • Select what to backup from the options listed.
  • Choose where to back up the files and name it.
  • *back up sizes will vary.*

Installing Ubuntu on a USB Stick

  • For machines with less than 2GB of RAM download the 32bit version of Ubuntu and later systems can download 64bit version here. (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop)
  • Go to www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer and download the universal usb installer and place it somewhere convenient.
  • Run the program and select Ubuntu from the dropdown menu.
  • Select your Ubuntu .iso file you have saved from earlier.
  • Select the flash drive you will be installing Ubuntu on and hit the create button.
  • Safely eject the USB drive and plug the USB drive into the new machine you will be installing Ubuntu on.

Installing Ubuntu on the computer

  • Insert the boot USB into the computer that will have Ubuntu on it.
  • Restart the computer. As soon as the first text appears on the screen, press the appropriate button to enter your BIOS/system setup which is usually one of the following keys: F1, F2, Del, Esc, F10, F11, or F12.
  • Once in the BIOS change the option for boot sequence to boot from the USB drive you installed Ubunutu on.
  • Once the boot order is changed restart your computer.
  • After a minute or two, an Install window will appear. Select English from the list to the left of the screen and click Install Ubuntu.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to select your country, timezone and keyboard layout.
  • When you get to the Prepare disk space screen, choose which option best suits your needs, I chose to erase Windows XP completely.
  • Follow the instructions to choose a username and password.
  • Click Install. The installation will begin, and should take 10-20 minutes to complete. When it is finished, choose to restart the computer and then remove your memory stick. Ubuntu should start to load.
  • Total Estimated time: 30-45 minutes
