Performing a clean install of Ubuntu

Backing up Files and Settings

• Click on the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > backup
• Click next and select the Back up files and settings.
• Select what to backup from the options listed.
• Choose where to back up the files and name it.
• *back up sizes will vary.*

Installing Ubuntu on a USB Stick

• For machines with less than 2GB of RAM download the 32bit version of Ubuntu and later systems can download 64bit version here. (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop)
• Go to www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer and download the universal usb installer and place it somewhere convenient.
• Run the program and select Ubuntu from the dropdown menu.
• Select your Ubuntu .iso file you have saved from earlier.
• Select the flash drive you will be installing Ubuntu on and hit the create button.
• Safely eject the USB drive and plug the USB drive into the new machine you will be installing Ubuntu on.

Installing Ubuntu on the computer

Insert the boot USB into the computer that will have Ubuntu on it.

Restart the computer. As soon as the first text appears on the screen, press the appropriate button to enter your BIOS/system setup which is usually one of the following keys: F1, F2, Del, Esc, F10, F11, or F12.

Once in the BIOS change the option for boot sequence to boot from the USB drive you installed Ubunutu on.

Once the boot order is changed restart your computer.

After a minute or two, an Install window will appear. Select English from the list to the left of the screen and click Install Ubuntu.

Follow the instructions on the screen to select your country, timezone and keyboard layout.

When you get to the Prepare disk space screen, choose which option best suits your needs, I chose to erase Windows XP completely.

Follow the instructions to choose a username and password.

Click Install. The installation will begin, and should take 10-20 minutes to complete. When it is finished, choose to restart the computer and then remove your memory stick. Ubuntu should start to load.
