I've recently been working on this module to get it working with hosting_web_cluster. Provision needs patching to get the rsync command to sync symlinks instead of following them. Provision backup also needs patching to then follow symlinks. With these patches (which i've attached) and the changes in the pull request, hosting_storage seems to work perfectly with the hosting_web_cluster and provides a way to get around the issue that the files directory isn't kept in sync between the remote servers.
There may be a better way of implementing this rather than patching provision. I'm not sure whether the patches I've produced would break anything but all seems to be fine so far....
