Tucson Watershed Visualizer

What is it?

The Tucson Watershed Visualizer is a web app that provides a number of visualizations of the state of the watershed in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson is in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, so watershed health is critical to the more than 1 million people who live in the greater Tucson area. Tucson is also heavily dependent on groundwater. While there was a time in the not so distant past that surface water could be found nearly year-round in the perennial rivers like the Santa Cruz, now there is very little surface water that can be found in the Tucson basin due to overpumping of groundwater.

Roadmap

Three visualizations are currently planned for the TWV:

  1. An input/output visualization
  2. A visualization of flows through the basin
  3. A timelapse view of the level of groundwater in the basin

The first visualization to be implemented will be the input/output visualization as the research for this simple, mostly tabular visualization should identify most of the data sources needed for all of the visualizations in the app.
