Currently you can easily paste in new images by copy & paste into the markdown file.
However, if you have uploaded already many images to your repository you want also to easily select existing images and insert them in your markdown.
Would this be possible to add? Sounds like a basic feature for a wyswyg editor.

if you alread have a uploaded images, you can insert via markdown syntax, or using vscode editos's multi cursor feature currently.
