New default custom data attributes don't work until you re-save the page settings...

When you added the new data types for custom data attributes, the "default" option doesn't take unless, after you create the page, you open up the page properties and save them. Can this be made to work without having to go back and re-save? For example, I have the "slots" that you can use to insert patterns into a page template in the Super Theme. By default, I have "hero" to display in "slot_01" by default on my frontpage template. But after the page is created, it doesn't display. Have to go back and save the properties of the page first. It should read the default value when the page is created.
