I used the option to launch iTunes via the play/pause button if it was not running, but since I moved on to Spotify I can not do the same, if beardie could support that it would be great :)

This is completely different :) But we can try to make a setting like: if the beardie "does not see" the running players, then start the player by default
Another possibility is to make beardie "free up" the shortcut used for play/pause when no active player is detected so that the shortcut can then be used by something else (like a service consisting of an applescript that launch iTunes for example)
