Hi there UTM users! Here is your guide for macOS virtual machines and what I have tried on my macOS 14.5 virtual machine
What I have tried
Running DOSBox-X
Troubleshooting
If you get a fatal error like this one:then you are running it from the
dosbox-x
directory. You need to run it from thedosbox-x-sdl2
folder.Synthesia
Works perfectly fine. No troubleshooting needed.
Synthesia.mov
Why is there no audio?
macOS screen recordings don't include the system audio. This is a known issue and I did not want to tinker with other screen recording applications like Monosnap. The audio actually does work in Synthesia.Shortcuts
Shortcuts is the app I used to make the collage for Geekbench 6. Here is the image (I could not sign into iCloud (this is a known bug) so remake the shortcut yourself :D):

I did some benchmarks on my virtual machine! Geekbench 6 on UTM
CPU
Here is the link: VirtualMac2,1 CPU
GPU
Note
OpenCL
is not supported in UTM (and probably evenVirtualisation.framework
).The GPU test does not work. Here is the result (when it does not work):
GPUBenchmarkFailure.mov
Guide
Setting up disk space
Set somewhere about 50 gb of disk space for the virtual machine.
Memory
Set half of your available memory on your Mac or set 40 gigabytes if you have more than 100 gigabytes of memory on your host.
Shared files
You can make a second folder to share with the host in your user folder. Example:
~/macOS VM Files
Fun fact
I updated my host to a MacBook Pro M3 Pro purely just for virtual machines :DScreenshots
