What was the original vision behind implementing the GitDriver?

git driver clones a given repository into a target folder.

I realize that the git driver clones a given repository into a target folder but what are some reasons that I might want that to do that?

In other words, what's a particular problem that it was intended to solve in the context of distributed documentation building?
