<abstract>Historical values for the Extended Spring Index (SI-x) of First Bloom, lilac sub-model. Each pixel is assigned a day of year value for the First Bloom Index. The Extended Spring Indices are mathematical models that predict the "start of spring" (timing of leaf out or bloom for species active in early spring) at a particular location. This model was constructed using historical observations of the timing of first bloom in a cloned lilac cultivar (Syringa x chinensis 'Red Rothomagensis'). Primary inputs to the model are temperature events, beginning January 1 of each year. Layers are available for each year from 2017 onward. Input temperature data based on NOAA National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Unrestricted Mesoscale Analysis (URMA) Products.</abstract>
<purpose>Our NCEP-based contemporary products enable real-time information on leaf and bloom dates, before PRISM data are available. We continue to make these NCEP-based layers available from 2017 forward, to enable inter-comparison with PRISM products, and to provide continuity in data availability. The Extended Spring Indices are used to understand spatiotemporal patterns in the onset of spring, and as an indicator of climate change by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Climate Assessment. </purpose>
