Not sure if it may has something to do with the term "pre" which is a HTML tag as the link end here and it does some strange splitting into HTML elements.

Which library is used to render the markdown, do we know? Underscores are standard in markdown for emphasis (alias for a single asterisk) - but of course should be ignored in URLs.
I linking to a documentation page, e.g. this one:
https://our.umbraco.com/Documentation/Reference/Routing/Request-Pipeline/outbound-pipeline-vpre_8_1
then in markdown the underscore characters are remove and the link become this, which is broken:
https://our.umbraco.com/Documentation/Reference/Routing/Request-Pipeline/outbound-pipeline-vpre81
