When updating to django 4.2, this feature was removed as it depended on an abandoned dependency: django-activeurl.
The active element was the app's colour, i.e. grey for DTTA or purple for Resources. Both nav menus had this feature (top and the one below). See below, example of missing nav-menu highlighting, when visiting https://dthm4kaiako.ac.nz/dtta/.
The changes removing active nav-menu highlighting were made in this pull: #1591
