First brew seems to have changed things around a bit.

brew cask install blank-screensaver

Should be:

brew install --cask blank-screensaver

I'm also getting an error when trying to install it:

Error: Failure while executing; `xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Users/XXX/Library/Screen\ Savers/Blank.saver` exited with 1. Here's the output:
xattr: /Users/XXX/Library/Screen Savers/Blank.saver: No such xattr: com.apple.quarantine

I have no m1 Mac to test on but I can't recreate the issue you describe with my slow Intel machine running Monterey. Could it be a bug within brew If you update brew and try to reinstall the screensaver - does it work then?

It stopped working on my M2. I am using https://intelliscapesolutions.com/screensavers/blankscreen instead.

Working on M4. But simply "display off" has the same effect for me.

Where do you find that setting?

@simmel System Settings -> Lock Screen:
Start Screen Saver when inactive - Never
Turn display off - choose desired period.

After the selected period, the display dims and turns off. I don't see the screensaver at any time.

I do the same nowadays probably for two reasons

  • The new lock screen looks amazing
  • External monitor boots up much faster
