\subsection*{Brief History of the Candidate}
Dr. Thomas C Eskridge is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech). He arrived at Florida Tech as a Research Associate Professor in the L3Harris Institute for Assured Information, where he was Technical Lead or Key Personnel on a variety of projects sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Department of Defense, as well as with large and small private companies. Dr. Eskridge transitioned from a Research Associate Professor to Associate Professor and currently maintains an active research and teaching schedule focusing on techniques and processes that amplify human performance through teamwork with artificial intelligence (AI) agents and other automation. Prior to joining Florida Tech, he was a Research Scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) in Pensacola, FL. There, he studied how visualizations can increase safety critical operator performance in aircraft and high-performance vehicles and how they can clarify operator knowledge for elicitation and instruction.
Dr. Eskridge has been the principal investigator (PI) over \$300K of externally funded projects and has made contributions as Technical Lead (TL), Key Personnel (KP), or Contributor (C) on research projects totaling \$10,948,298.00. He has published over 90 technical publications in scientific peer-reviewed conference proceedings such as \textit{ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems}, \textit{International Conference on Case-based Reasoning}, \textit{International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics}, and in peer-reviewed journals including \textit{New Space Journal}, \textit{IEEE Systems Journal}, \textit{EURASIP Journal on Information Security}, \textit{American Intelligence Journal}, \textit{IEEE Intelligent Systems}, \textit{Metaphor and Symbol}, and \textit{Journal of Information and Knowledge Management}. Before joining Florida Tech, Dr. Eskridge conducted research in Human-Centered Computing focusing on the development and commercial transfer of an aircraft instrumentation system that drastically reduced pilot instrument scan time and dramatically increased flying performance. Dr. Eskridge is also an entrepreneur who founded a commercial visual inspection system company based on the similarity-based reasoning and learning system he developed as part of his Ph.D. dissertation. This company, Intelligent Reasoning Systems, Inc., operated independently for ten years, with over 150 employees in offices around the world, including Taipei, Tokyo, London, and Frankfurt. The combination of advanced research focused on practical applications throughout his career has resulted in 18 issued patents with Dr. Eskridge as inventor.
\subsection*{Teaching and Related Activities}
\label{teaching}
My teaching contributions have been made primarily at the graduate level and have resulted in the development of eleven courses (see Table ~\ref{newcourse}). Four of these courses were created as a result of the redesign of the Human-Centered Design degree program, an effort that I led for the department. The driving goal for all of my courses is to put the topic in a practical, applied context so that students can use their hands-on projects as a tool to understand the science. I also place a high value on working individually with students to help them understand how to conduct work and research in the topic or to make progress their degree program. This commitment is evidenced by the consistent development of independent study courses that customize course content to address the topics that students are most excited and motivated to learn (see Table~\ref{indep}). It is also evidenced by my commitment to students in the Capstone (see Table ~\ref{capstone}) and the undergraduate Senior Design classes (see Table ~\ref{srdesign}). It is my belief that providing some extra attention to student interests and needs can instill in them a deeper appreciation for the subject and a significantly greater understanding of how to conduct research or development projects in an effective and efficient manner. I believe that students will be able to leverage this understanding to increase their chances of success in their transition to industry or in the furtherance of the academic careers. Students have responded to this approach by judging my teaching with an average evaluation for the semesters from 2017-2023 of \textbf{4.57}. A detailed course description is shown in Table ~\ref{details} and a summary of evaluation scores is shown in Table~\ref{tabeval}.

\subsubsection*{Teaching Role and Success}
I view my role as a teacher as one of providing frameworks for students to learn. To do this, I introduce the topic, then provide the scaffolding needed for students to understand the key elements of the topic and how those elements interact with others. This replaces what would have been a list of facts with a way to understand those facts and apply them in practice. My priority in class is to convey the material in a way that students can apprehend the power in the concepts and determine how they can be used and also improved. I also stress in my classes that the projects that we undertake are not simply for a class grade, but can serve other purposes for them as well: the project might address a part of their thesis or dissertation, or address a key interest they have. In all cases, I stress that the level of quality that is expected equivalent to what is expected in a conference publication and I also encourage them to work with me after the class has ended to publish the work. This approach has resulted in several publications with students.\\
I strive to learn new teaching techniques through blogs, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and books such as Lang's \textit{Small Teaching}. Drawing from the human-centered design methodology, each class is a prototype where I experiment with different strategies of ordering, organizing, and presenting the material. Each semester, I updated the examples used and evidence provided.
My strengths as a teacher are the enthusiasm that I bring to the course and attempt to convey to the students. I run most of my classes as extended discussions and encourage students to participate with questions, anecdotes and extreme positions that are easy for students to disagree with. I believe that students also have this view of my teaching, as evidenced by the student comments in previous section on teaching.
My weaknesses as a teacher are mainly organizational. I am very wiling to spend extra time during class to exploit a good discussion, but this can cause a shift in the syllabus that needs to be communicated and adjusted in the LMS. Early in my teaching, I received negative feedback from some students on the time it took to grade assignments. I've since made adjustments to the course schedule and my own weekly schedule to ensure that assignments are graded within the week.

Dr. Eskridge typically advises 15-20 undergraduate CS students per semester, approximately 19 MS students in HCD, CYB, and CS, and approximately 8 Ph.D. students from CS and HCD.

My research is focused on how people interact with technology to improve their performance broadly scoped. For some applications, improved performance means faster reaction times. For other applications, improved performance means less stress and more time in a flow state. Performance improvement happens in three ways: moving from cognition to perception (creating visualizations that make selecting the right action effortless), enhancing cognition (creating agents that work as teammates and provide decision support), and responding to operator state (having automation measure the cognitive and emotional state of the operator and responding accordingly).

Dr. Eskridge has been the principal investigator (PI) on approximately \$300K of external funding at Florida Tech. He participated in several projects as Technical Lead amounting to \$2,368,830 in the last three years. He has also played a substantial role supporting a number of other projects at the L3Harris Institute for Assured Information as Key Personnel (KP) or Collaborator (C). The list of projects is shown in Table ~\ref{funding}.
I believe that collaboration is key to having a vibrant research organization. I have always been willing to participate on projects with other PIs if the work in those projects further my own research goals and permit me to direct graduate student involvement. Similarly, I am also happy to serve as Co-PI with junior faculty to assist them in their research goals. My commitment to collaboration is not just within the institute or department, but extends to other Colleges in the university, evidenced by my partnership with the Bisk College of Business on TETRA.

It is typical for researchers in computer science to focus on conference publications because the field is changing so quickly. Table~\ref{confh5} shows the h5-index and h5-median scores of a number of the conferences I have published in. These values reflect the five year average h-index for the conference. I have consulted with three different companies since I came to Florida Tech. A six month contract with Modus Operandi of Melbourne, FL supported an SBIR contract they had to develop cyber operator visualizations for their workflow. I conducted a cognitive task analysis for the project to ensure the design of the visualization would meet the needs of the operator. Sentry View Systems contracted me for two months to assist them with a project to test a lightweight, mobile ground system for detecting small UAVs. I wrote flightpath creation software that allowed them to simulate drone paths using hardware-in-the-loop testing.
I have a continuing relationship with HyLighter, LLC of Tallahassee, FL. My work there has focused on product and market development for HyLighter's eponymous product. This includes feature testing, prototyping, and experimentation.
