Do any models trained on LIVECell inherit the non-commercial restriction? #32

Hi,

This dataset looks great!

I see it has a license statement:

All images, annotations and models associated with LIVECell are published under Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license.

My question is: what does this mean for any models other people might train using LIVECell?

I ask because we have* developed an open-source cell segmentation method, InstanSeg.

We are releasing several pre-trained models to the community. We would like to make these freely-available under open-source licenses where possible (e.g. Apache v2.0).

Because 'non-commercial' isn't compatible with the Open Source Definition, we are not sure under what license terms (if any) we are able to share any models trained on LIVECell. We'd rather not add a non-commercial restriction to our models if it isn't necessary, because this quickly becomes complex - even for academic, open-source projects like ours (e.g. see https://freedomdefined.org/Licenses/NC).

Thanks,

Pete
