I noticed that whenever the keyboard shortcut is used to run this, it doesn't just open the Terminal and quit. It stays running and is visible in Activity Monitor. Do you know why?

I suspect it is necessary to run the command to open Terminal, because it is part of the app.
It doesn't do anything else, so it shouldn't drain the battery.
It is probably possible to describe an app cycle so the app quits after n seconds, but it is possible that it will take more energy to reopen on each shortcut and/or the shortcut can run slower or not activate at all. Anyway, you are free to try it out
