I have used CDAT related modules for a loooong long time (I'm still using it, actually), but the manpower at PCMDI has been redirected to extending xarray with features that were previously available in CDAT (and were always extremely useful for our Climate community)
=> xCDAT: Xarray Climate Data Analysis Tools: an extension of xarray for climate data analysis on structured grids. It serves as a modern successor to the Community Data Analysis Tools (CDAT) library
It probably would not hurt to check if xarray+xcdat features can be used in CliMAF. On the other hand I have also advertised CliMAF when I read this xCDAT discussion
