I tried e3d with 2 different stl files but received this:

andy@oceanus:~/src/E3D/bin$ ./e3d -i /media/andy/AEFB-AAF0/MonoKnob_v2.STL 
e3d: Line 1: unexpected line
STLEXP Object01

andy@oceanus:~/src/E3D/bin$ ./e3d -i /media/andy/AEFB-AAF0/flute.stl

MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH-MESH

when i compile it with visual C++6.0 there occur
fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'err.h': No such file or directory
