HDMI CEC Example Commands L3 Testing

Test Category 1: Power On/Off Control

TV to Device(STB) (TV turns on, device powers on):

• TV sends:

  • <User Control Pressed>: When the TV is turned on.
  • <Active Source>: TV declares itself as the active source.
  • <Image View On>: Requests all devices to power on.

• Device receives and responds:

  • <Feature Abort>: If the device does not support the command.
  • <Report Power Status>: Device reports its power status.
  • <Device Vendor ID>: Vendor ID of the device.

Device to TV (Device turns on, TV powers on and switches input):

• Device sends:
  • Image View On: Requests the TV to power on.
  • Active Source: Device declares itself as the active source.
  • TV receives and responds:
  • Give Device Power Status: TV may request the device's power status.
  • Set Stream Path: TV sets the path to the active source.
  • Routing Change: TV changes the input to the active source.

Example Message Flow:

• TV turns on:

  • TV to All Devices: <Image View On>
  • TV to All Devices: <Active Source> (TV)

• Device responds:

  • Device to TV: <Report Power Status> (On)
  • Device to TV: <Device Vendor ID>

• Device becomes active source (if applicable):

  • Device to TV: <Active Source> (Device)
  • TV to Device: <Give Device Power Status>
  • Device to TV: <Report Power Status> (On)

Test Category 2: Volume Control

TV or Device(STB) remote controls volume of an external audio device:

• TV or STB sends:

  • <User Control Pressed> (Volume Up/Down/Mute): Corresponding CEC commands to the audio device.

• Audio device receives and responds:

  • <Feature Abort>: If the device does not support the command.
  • <Report Audio Status>: Audio device reports current volume/mute status.

Example Message Flow:

• User presses volume up on TV or STB remote:

  • TV or STB to Audio Device: <User Control Pressed> (Volume Up)

• Audio Device responds:

  • Audio Device to TV or STB: <Report Audio Status> (Current Volume Level)

Test Category 3: Input Switching

Select an input on the TV:

• TV sends:

• <Active Source>: TV declares the new active source.

• <Request Active Source>: TV requests the current active source from all devices.

• Device receives and responds:

• <Active Source>: Devices that are the current active source respond with their status.

• <Set Stream Path>: TV sets the path to the selected device.

Example Message Flow:

1. User selects new input on TV:

• TV to New Device: <Active Source> (New Device)
• TV to All Devices: <Request Active Source>

2. Devices respond:

• Current Device to TV: <Active Source> (Current Device)
• New Device to TV: <Active Source> (New)
