Bad UX & lack of error handling for dropdowns

Dropdown fields require you to input key value pairs in a specific format. Most users don't understand this and it isn't really explained anywhere. Worst of all, when you enter the wrong configuration options, the whole page breaks. And THEN there's no dropdown options displayed on the edit page, so you can't even fix them after it's broken without manually going into the database.
