Unfortunately, npm is lowering the performance grade of the entire Node.js ecosystem. The package manager should no longer bundle and should be prompted by Node.js during the installation.

I second this, but also because it is now owned by Microsoft, which has no place in an open source project.

Npm is currently significantly slower than all of its competitors. Users compare the performance of 'npm install' and conclude that Node.js is slow. To prevent this and to prevent npm from monopolizing, the package manager should not be installed during the Node.js installation.

I think you can choose on the installation if you want npm or not. FWIW I would also like to see Node.js not giving an unfair advantage to one project over alternatives, and that's why I'm contributing to Corepack, which, once it has reached stability, could be a reasonable alternative. Please contribute if you can.
