nvidia driver fails to load after kernal update

I have a PC with an Nvidia-GFORCE0750ti graphics card.

I installed elementary 7.1 from USB
I clicked the option to include 3rd party drivers
and everything worked fine

after a 'sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade" I end up with a kernal that wont load the nvidia driver
so I end up with a black screen, I can boot to recovery mode but then what ?

There are a confusing number of posts on this issue. But none of the solutions seem to work so far.

What are the steps to sort this out so that kernel updates dont break my machine.
