Training Data
This page outlines the existing annotated data from the HALLO project that would be of sufficient quality to build/test/train detection and classification algorithms for killer whales.
Cliffs notes: 8 locations with some replication (e.g. two hydrophones near Lime Kiln, and need to follow up on the Boundary Pass locations (it's a big pass) Data covering 2011-2021 Minimum sample rate 16khz 17k Killer Whales, 140k False positives Of the killer whales, 6k Northern Residents, 6k Biggs, 3k Southern Resident, 1k offshore

The exact geographic location of the DFO hydrophones is protected. A copy of the dataset is stored on Ceadar. Kaitlin has accessed annotations and cleaned them up as well.

Methodology:
PAMGUARD whistle and moan detector was used to detect killer whales (NRKWs, Bigg's, SRKWs) and humpback signals. Each detection contour was validated by DFO staff. Thus, the audio data
JASCO has provided 3s clips that have been expertly annotated by Jen Walidchuck (and others). Data were collected from two locations, Boundary Pass (48.76078, -123.06794) and Roberts Bank (49.042645, -123.31744). The former represents a transit area and animals are (anecdotally) noted to swim by without any detections. The clips are the product of a two-layer detection and classification algorithm but were not annotated to ecotype.

The SMRU Consulting hydrophone is deployed in ~30m water off of the Lime Kiln lightouse on San Juan Island. Data are continuously recorded and validated by trained observers.

The Orcasound hydrophone network in Washington (USA) maintains nearshore cabled hydrophones typically deployed via a dock of convenience at depths of 1-10 meters. Raw audio data are streamed continuously to open access S3 data buckets in HLS format. Some locations also archive in lossless FLAC format.
Locations & approx deployment date ranges:
- Orcasound Lab (Haro Strait) 2018-present (continuous, 10s HLS segments); ~2002-present (quasi-continuous, 30s WAV files)
- Port Townsend (Admiralty Inlet) 2018-present (continuous, 10s HLS segments)
- Bush Point (Admiralty Inlet) 2018-late 2022 (continuous, 10s HLS segments)
