Applicant Challenge Project

Due September 23rd, 2016

Hi there!

Thanks for applying to join Open Web. Before we take a look at your application, we are asking all applicants to complete a small project as part of the on-boarding process. This is to get a sense of how you structure your work.

Essentially what you will be doing is creating a prototype application. A prototype application is a rough outline of the app's layout and functionality. No programming or design experience is required. As with many Computer Science classes at BU, reasoning and logic is emphasized in this project.

The application you will be using to build this prototype is called "Marvel" and is available on the iOS and Google Play stores for free.

Download Marvel for iOS
Download Marvel for Android

If you do not own an iOS or Android device, please reach out to one of the Open Web members, and they will help you out.

Before Starting Your Project

To get an idea of what we are looking for, view this example prototype on your computer or mobile device: https://marvelapp.com/b52bd9

Before beginning, please watch this introduction to wireframing video: CharliMarie TV How to wireframe a website. This video shows how to wireframe a personal website, but the skills learned here can easily be adapted to mobile or web apps.

If you would like a more in-depth look at wireframing, feel free to check out the DevTips Wireframing video or read Wireframing: The Hands-On Guide.

Instructions for Project:

Download Marvel on your iOS or Android device

Come up with an app idea to work on! You can make a web, iOS, or Android app. If you are unable to think of an idea, you can prototype an expense tracking app for managing money.

Prototype your application! It is recommended that you use the device template provided by Marvel for sketches. (Use the first page of iPhones)

Use your device's camera to scan in each page.

Link all of your slides together using hotspots. Be sure to add some animations!

Preview your prototype by tapping the blue play button.

When you are finished, tap the "Save/Share" button in the top right. You will need to create a free account.

On the Share screen, tap the "Copy Url" option.

Send an email to [email protected] with your submission. The subject line should be "Challenge Submission" and the body of the email should include your full name, your BU email, and the link to your prototype.

Once we receive your prototype, we will look at both the prototype and your application and get back to you shortly! Please note that not everyone who completes this project will get accepted. Use this as your motivation to really "wow" us!

If you are in need of assistance in creating your prototype, you can send a Facebook message to either Liam DeBeasi or Lawrence Luo.

We look forward to seeing your prototypes!
