NVM - Automatically switch node environments

As our buildsystem uses Node 12, we can use nvm to switch to another version based upon what is defined in an .npmrc.

We also want the default to be system node, which was installed via brew. If no .npmrc is present in a directory or in its parent folders, system node will be used.

Installation (Mac OS)

brew install nvm
mkdir -p ~/.nvm

Add the following to ~/.zshrc or your desired shell configuration file:

export NVM_DIR="$HOME/.nvm"
[ -s "/usr/local/opt/nvm/nvm.sh" ] && . "/usr/local/opt/nvm/nvm.sh"  # This loads nvm

Deeper Shell Integration

We need to add some more code to ~/.zshrc or your desired shell configuration file, for automatic switching of node environments:

Restart your Terminal and then add system as default alias.
