The UMLS (Unified Medical Language System) implements medical ontologies and a mapping framework for natural language processing to capture similarities between medical concepts. It is meant to resolve ambiguities by providing a canonical model of medical concepts.

There exists an open source framework that uses the UMLS data to implement automatic similarity detection. http://umls-similarity.sourceforge.net/
