Personally I would prefer to "sniff" now and then rather than every page load which seems a little excessive to me.
You could add a check box to disable automatic sniffing under "Options" for Chrome Sniffer which, upon being checked, would instead provide an icon to click where Chrome Sniffer normally displays icons. Clicking the icon would obviously start the whole sniffing process for the current page. The "click to sniff" icon should be something unobtrusive to avoid sticking out too much.
Also, if possible, when auto-sniff is disabled, it would be best if any JS, CSS or images required by Chrome Sniffer aren't injected until a sniff is requested.
