I've learned that some Linux distros get their network routing all messed up if you install NetworkManager and it encounters an ethernet interface that has no matching ifcfg-* file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. Investigate extent of problem, and add magic to drop a file to prevent this happening.
Note that this is a preventative for a problem that is quite likely to happen as a side-effect of configuring X11 support.
