If we could at least get something that we can run manually on a contest to immediately determine the winner, that would be great for the demo.

Can you elaborate on this a bit more? The way I saw this being achieved is with the start/end times being in the contest and the logic for someone winning being handled clientside.

E.x. Client requests contest x. x ended such and such time ago. Therefore the winner is whichever user had the higher score. Server would enforce trying to vote/whatever if the contest already ended.

Otherwise if you have a different idea lay it out here.
