Windows Version

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.22621.2861]

WSL Version

2.1.5.0

Are you using WSL 1 or WSL 2?

  • WSL 2
  • WSL 1

Kernel Version

5.15.146.1-2

Distro Version

Debian Sid

Other Software

No response

Repro Steps

make -j8

Expected Behavior

Kernel compiles successfully

Actual Behavior

Eventually I get the error:
net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_ECN.c:17:10: fatal error: linux/netfilter_ipv4/ipt_ECN.h: No such file or directory
17 | #include <linux/netfilter_ipv4/ipt_ECN.h>
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Later there are some other similar ones. Now, there's no such file in include/linux/netfilter_ipv4/, but there is one in include/uapi/linux/netfilter_ipv4/, along with every other one that end up not found during kernel compilation. My guess is that somehow make never consults the include/uapi/ folder, most likely due to a mistake in the makefile. I've been unable to find the problem in there, though.

SOLVED. Turns out I had to do make headers. Which didn't work either because I had the misfortune to untar the tarball into an NTFS system, which apparently doesn't play nice with lower/uppercase. Well done WSL team on including this vital info in compile instructions.
