I have some thoughts regarding this.

1. .emacs files are discouraged, we should use .emacs.d/init.el or similar. https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Init-File.html
2. If we are catering for newcomers/first-timers then we should make Emacs itself easier to use. There is a nice project here: https://github.com/susam/emfy
3. Why do we not add slime via an Emacs package manager? We could also make use of the wonderful use-package
4. In fact, most of this file could actually be written in elisp and we could just give the instruction to download emacs and then place out customised init file in the correct location...
